Third Coast Percussion

Third Coast Lullaby is a study on pulse. But while pulses are usually associated with stability – points of orientation in a rhymical environment – they here are the very objects that become adrift. As the hierarchy of strong and weak beats begins to loosen, the piece enters an almost dreamlike state, where temporal order vanishes as fast as it appears, and where stable hierarchies are replaced by waves of constantly transforming relations between the four players’ rhythms.

Third Coast Lullaby was written for Third Coast Percussion and inspired by Sean Conner’s, Robert Dillon’s, Peter Martin’s, and David Skidmore’s unique ability to move their playing in a heartbeat from razor-sharp metric precision to almost trance-like ambient flow.

Setup

Setup

38 wooden instruments – ideally woodblocks, but other instruments can be choosen as substitutes – are distributed among the four players according to the scale below.
On each wood-block should be a small felt patch to enable ppp playing.
